Artist Statement

The Totem series of paintings represent an undercurrent of cultural uniformity of shapes and color patterns following a symmetrical pattern.  Symmetry calls our attention to a common thread of existence from ancient tribal culture to contemporary peoples of the world.  A central focal point in each work is surrounded with a complexity of shapes that may suggest human shapes and movement.  The whole system of patterns is developed using a line structure of curved and straight lines and color against a white space dividing the pieces into a complex of positive and negative space.  My hope for this work is that people will see a language of shapes, igniting their imagination, which will bridge people's differences and bring unity of spirit and purpose. All Totems are 8 1/2 by 11 inches in size.
