BIOGRAPHY
Born in 1940, Mike grew up on the shores of Lake Washington in Seattle until the age of nine. At the age of four he attended drawing classes through the Seattle Gifted Art Program. In 1950 his family moved to Enumclaw, Washington to begin a dairy farm. His interest in art continued to flourish through a developing appreciation for the natural pastoral landscape in the area. He attended Enumclaw High School where he excelled in painting, drawing and design. At the 1958 graduation ceremonies he received the Community Art Award.
After a commitment to the Army Reserve he enrolled at the University of Washington in 1960. Mike received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in graphic design in 1964. He worked as an independent commercial artist for two years but was more interested in teaching art. He enrolled in the teaching program at Seattle University and finished his certification for secondary teaching in 1966. Mike taught one year at Bellevue High School, and three years at Redmond High School as the Fine Arts Department Chairperson.
Mike delayed teaching in 1970 as he began his Master of Fine Arts Degree at Fort Wright College in Spokane studying with Ben Frank Moss, professor of painting, now at Dartmouth College. Mike received his degree in 1972 and accepted a teaching position in painting, drawing, and design at Enumclaw High School. He remained on the staff from 1972 until his retirement in 1993. Mike also taught extension night classes in art for Green River Community College for adults.
In 1978 Mike accepted an exchange teaching position in New Zealand at Papakura High School in a rural area south of Auckland, on the North Island. He worked closely with Maori students and with numerous Polynesian artists and writers. Mike furthered his artistic advancement by the influence of Maori art and design motifs that he applied in his own changing landscapes and seascapes.
In 1986 Mike attended Seattle University to begin two master degrees in theology at the School of Theology and Ministry. He graduated in 1988 with a degree in Theological Studies and a degree in Ministry in 1994. He accepted a position as marketing coordinator for the School of Theology and Ministry. He worked at the university from 1995 - 1998.
Mike had intended to use his art and training in therapy at a retreat center in Eastern Oregon, but those plans failed to materialize. By 1998 he left Seattle University and moved to Bellingham, Washington and created his art studio where he develops design, liturgical and fine art for churches, commercial properties, and clients seeking original art work. His paintings have appeared in galleries throughout the Pacific Northwest, California, and New Zealand since 1971.
Mike began writing in 1983 and has been published by several well known publishers. His writings include books on art, creativity, spirituality, and nature. His work can be found on Amazon.com.
